What is Aromasin
Aromasin Exemestane falls into the class of drugs known as an aromatase inhibitor. The drugs that are a part of this category interfere with aromatase, a substance that is required to make female sex hormones called estrogens, especially in postmenopausal women. It helps in treating hormone-dependent breast cancer by reducing estrogen levels in the body.
Uses of the drug:
Exemestane is indicated for the treatment of breast cancer in women. It is only recommended for those women who no longer have their menstrual periods, either naturally (after menopause) or because they have had their ovaries surgically removed. The medicine also reduces the risk of spreading or recurrence of breast cancer. It is also prescribed by the physicians when cancer has not responded or has recurred after treating with other drugs.
Working of the drug
Exemestane functions by inhibiting aromatase enzyme for the conversion of androgen to estrogen. Androgen is the primary source of estrogen in postmenopausal women. The medicine decreases circulating estrogen thereby decreasing the spreading of estrogen-sensitive breast cancer.
Pfizer is the manufacturer of the drug Aromasin 25mg. It is one of the worlds premier biopharmaceutical companies.
